Destiny 2 has many challenges that arrive each season now, but only one per week that gives you the material you need to upgrade the Crown of Sorrow in the HELM, in addition to the one you get from the weekly story quest.
This week, Destiny 2 wants you to run the Sever – Grief mission and beat it using only Void, Kinetic or Stasis damage. We had one of these previously with Solar, Kinetic and Stasis, but this one has a catch.
The solar one did not trigger this issue where you can complete the mission and find you didn’t get the challenge. Because…
- The scythe that spawns during the boss fight technically counts as a solar weapon doing solar damage even if you don’t have it equipped in a weapon slot. It will kill the challenge. Do not pick up the scythe even as Eris is yelling at you to do so.
- While a more niche case, the Firefly perk also counts as Solar damage, and will kill the challenge. So leave Ace of Spades / Fatebringer at home, as they’re not kinetic enough for this.
During this mission you can whack things with the big wrench, because that counts as kinetic damage. I’m not sure about shooting explosive barrels, but maybe uh, try to avoid doing that, if you see any. Hey, if the scythe counts, who knows.
This is pretty tricky and something I am glad I was made aware of before I ran it, as I would have been somewhat annoyed to run a full Sever mission for this and not understand why I didn’t get the challenge. Which technically the rationale makes sense here, these types of elemental challenges are usually about using certain subclasses or weapon loadouts, not doing elemental damage which things like the scythe and firefly negate as the wrong damage type.
There is likely to be at least one more of these to come, no doubt with Arc, Stasis and Kinetic, and the same rules apply there. Solar week could use the scythe and Firefly no problem, but the other two cannot.
I am mostly done needing to upgrade my Crown of Sorrow anyway, as all I really have left is the middle row full of upgrades for the currency I cannot get rid of fast enough, as opposed to Umbral energy which is in much shorter supply. But I also just finished my last frame to have all six Haunted weapons and all four Opulent weapons ready to be crafted, so that part of the grind is done for my period. Now, back to dungeon farming.
